3. New Member Nominations (Jessica)
  • School Council nomination forms were submitted online as part of the school start-up package
  • People who submitted online form are appointed council members: Tammy, Ashley, Melanie, Helena, Sarah, Chrystal, Stephanie, Khadiya, Julbee; Amanda is also an appointed member as she completed the form at the meeting
  • Tammy and Ashley self-nominated for Chair
  • Mallory self-nominated for Treasurer with no opposition
  • Melanie self-nominated for Secretary with no opposition

Tammy Walduck and Ashley Nugent will serve as Co-Chairs. 

Mallory Harris will serve as Treasurer. 

Melanie French will serve as Secretary.

 Responsibilities of Council Members 

  • Maintain school-wide perspective
  • Regularly attend meetings
  • Participate in information and training
  • Adhere to School Council Code of Ethics
  • Act as link between School Council and community
  • Encourage engagement of all parents within school community
  • Participate on subcommittees and assist with various tasks 

School Council Code of Ethics 

  • Consider best interest of all students
  • Limit discussions to matters of concern for community as a whole, rather than individuals
  • Treat others with respect
  • Encourage a positive environment
  • Do not disclose confidential information
  • Use communication channels when questions/concerns arise
  • Promote high standards of ethical practice
  • Student Council has one representative from each grade; the grade 8 representative attends School Council meetings
  • Mme. Hamilton is the only support staff at KPS
  • A community representative can attend meetings
  • Individuals may request that a topic be added to the agenda at a School Council meeting by emailing the Co-Chairs (kpsmemberatlarge@gmail.com) and / or the principal (jessica.beatty@yrdsb.ca) at least 24 hours before the meeting
  • Any topics brought forward which are not on the agenda will be tabled for discussion at the next School Council meeting
Inform Jessica if you are aware of any community members who would like to be part of the School Council.
5. School events (Alicia)
  • We need to discuss the things that School Council will fundraise for this year
  • School Improvement Plan Items: Student Achievement, Oral French/Math Focus, Human Rights and Inclusive Education, Health and Well Being
  • The amounts shown below are cost estimates; if School Council does not fundraise enough money to cover the entire cost of an item, the school may cover the remainder 

Student Achievement 

  • Dufflebag Theatre (Primary) - $750; they perform in Canada, the US, and internationally in both English and French 

Oral French/Math 

  • Math/Stem Workshops - $4250 

Human Rights and Inclusive Education 

  • Family Assistance (Lunches) - $1500 

Health and Well Being

  • Grade 8 Graduation - $2000
  • Spring BBQ - $500
  • Carry forward from 2024/2025 is $5900 (hot lunches revenue) and $640 from hot dogs/spring BBQ
  • Staff would like something like Scientists in School, but with a math focus
  • Grade 8s will sell cookies on Fridays with pizza lunches
  • Grade 8 graduation will be subsidized through fundraising of grade 8 parent subcommittee
  • Family assistance - covers field trips, hot lunches, etc. for families in need
  • KPS also has Nutrition Program; fruits/vegetables for snack
  • Beautification project for centennial celebration (e.g. murals) should start as this event occurs next year
  • Alicia will send the link to register for You’re the Chef fall training.
  • Helena will lead the spring BBQ.
  • Jessica will connect with grade 8 teachers regarding contacting parent volunteers.
6. School Events (Jessica)
  • Halloween Dance (October 23 - day before P.A. Day) - Ashley and Stephanie will lead; book fair will take place at the same time; suggestion made that we could accept Halloween costume donations; could use this as an opportunity to recruit parent volunteers for future events
  • Children’s Market (December 15 - 19)
  • Hot Dog Lunches (Dates TBD) - Helena, Ashley, and Tammy will lead subcommittee
  • Bailey’s Homestead Dinner (Date TBD)
  • Spring BBQ (proposed for May 28)
  • Graduation (June 18); afterparty at the ROC; Bailey’s Homestead will cover dinner because KPS is using them for hot lunches for the entire year
  • Pro Grant Event (Date TBD); $850 for family event; to be discussed at the next meeting
  • Scientists in School and BINGO night to be discussed at the next meeting
  • Suggestion made that the school purchase new jerseys for athletic events; Helena and Brian will lead athletic subcommittee

Ashley and Stephanie will lead the Halloween Dance subcommittee.

Helena, Ashley, and Tammy will lead the Hot Dog Lunch subcommittee.

Helena and Brian will lead the Athletic subcommittee.
