Holiday Market Update (Tammy, Jessica)
  • Money raised from School Cash Online fee - $1449 ; this will go towards 100th anniversary
  • Money raised from cash purchases - $2364.40; this was donated to the Georgina Food Pantry; they were very surprised and grateful to receive such a large donation
  • Posting the event on School Cash Online went well; people gave bigger donations
  • From a tracking perspective, there was a learning curve; adjustments can easily be made going forward; highlighting that there’s a pre-paid credit on the tracking document would help make the process easier and quicker
  • Library was the perfect set-up; traffic was better because it wasn’t spread out; able to get more kids inside and avoid having a lineup down the hall
  • Tables were very well organized
  • Volunteers were there to give assistance on helping students where to find items (e.g. gifts for mom)
  • The event was inclusive to all students; on the last day, all students who hadn’t purchased anything were invited to come down and choose a couple of items; students were very happy; this process was possible due to tracking of students making purchases at market
  • There were few items left over at the end; some of the new items remaining went to the Optimist Club; books were donated to El Pida Cafe to create a reading area
  • Only Student Council got training on gift wrapping; some grade 8 volunteers would have benefited from training
  • Some parents were not sure if the tickets purchased were for admission to the market, or for purchasing items; people also needed clarification on what each ticket was worth and the range in cost of items; next year, someone could make and share a video explaining how the market works
  • Ideas for next year - could label a bin of items for wrapping with student name so that items could be wrapped later, which would help avoid students spending a long time at the market; could let grade 8 teachers know ahead of time when the students will be needed to volunteer, which would support their classroom planning

Principal Report - Food Requirements (Jessica)
  • According to the food and beverage policy from 2010, schools are allowed to sell treats only 10 times per year; however, there is no limit for the number of days that the school can give treats away for free
  • Hot Dog days are included in treat days
  • Moving forward, freezies will be given out and not sold (e.g. at Terry Fox run)
  • Cookies used for cookie sales are not counted as treats

Principal Report - Updates from York Region Public Health (Jessica)
  • There is no longer a policy stating that parents will be notified if a student in their child’s class has lice
  • In the weekly parent newsletter, information about lice and reminders to check for lice can be included; parents can be encouraged to share if their child is affected -
  • KPS received $500 for the nutrition program

Principal Report - Parking Issues (Jessica)
  • Snow is being moved off the property
  • Parents need to be reminded not to get out of their car at the kiss-in-ride

Principal Report - Electives (Jessica)
  • MURC staff commented that this was the best group of students they have ever had (art, gym, swimming)
  • Snow Valley went well; the only issue was that some students kept tubing past the end time; next year, one staff/volunteer should stay at the top to ensure students stop going down hill
  • Many staff were involved in helping with activities
  • It would be helpful to have parent volunteers in the school foyer to assist at the start of the day (e.g. forgotten items)

Principal Report - EQAO Results and Math Plan (Jessica)
  • Grade 6 - Overall, scores in Math, Reading, and Writing increased from 2022/2023 to 2023/2024, and then decreased slightly from 2023/2024 to 2024/2025
  • School Achievement Goal - Prioritize achievement in math by developing foundational skills and supporting students to apply those skills with fluency in real life problems; baseline assessment showed that students did well in grade 4, but by grade 8 they were a couple of grades behind in math fluency
  • Black River P.S. Strategy - Integrated social studies into literacy; took time from this period for 30 minutes, 2 - 3 times per week, to work on math fluency (e.g. math games, facts, etc.); if KPS adopts this strategy, a challenge will be that the work will become the responsibility of French teachers; could call it integrated social studies with literacy; Mr. Davison may be able to support if he is timetabled for this purpose
  • Current Strategy - For grade 4s, Mme Beatty is co-teaching math with Mme Smyth; they are using a method that focuses on multiplicative reasoning (learning how to multiply); Mme Beatty wants to understand how the method works; students begin learning multiplication in grade 3
